VIA Airport New Air Traffic Control Tower
Megamorphosis partnered with Architecture and Engineering firm RS&H to replace the existing air traffic control tower with a new state of the art facility. The new tower has a cab floor height of 85 feet and an overall height of 120 feet, along with a base building for support spaces. Megamorphosis is serving as the design architect for the project, proposing a forward thinking design that takes cues from the existing terminal building, as well as airplanes and VIA’s logo. The result is a stunning design that also meets the FAA requirements for air traffic control towers. A big challenge was creating an efficient structural design for this slender and tapered tower. The design team employed the use of wind tunnel testing in order to minimize the size of structural members while maximizing structural efficiency, therefore reducing cost.
